Greetings Bay Nordic Skiers-

Finally! We are able to have a scheduled session this weekend on snow. Brown County has rolled the ski trails at The Reforestation Camp with the minimal snow available…they are ready for 100+ kids. Since the trails are not "officially" open, the shelter will not be open so please plan accordingly. Restrooms will be available from the outdoor entrance.

As a reminder, the Session will be from 10:00am to Noon. Please have the kids in the groups on time so the warm-up session can begin. Temperatures may be a little chilly so we want to keep the kids moving.

CANCELLED – JAN 7TH SESSION

We held off as long as we could, but unfortunately, the snow conditions (or lack of!) this year will cause us to cancel the Bay Nordic session for this Saturday. The forecast is no snow with warm temps that will create muddy conditions at the Camp. Brown County has all ski trails in the County closed right now. The fortunate part is that we do have a make-up date set in February…the plan is to get some snow (or find some snow guns!) before January 21^st and have make up for the time lost.

For anyone wishing to ski this weekend, check out the trail reports on www.skinnyski.com. It looks like the closest snow is in Wausau.

We miss all the kids, the weather this year really bums us out. Keep your fingers crossed for snow!!!

Session 1 - Our First Dryland Event!

The snow conditions (or lack of!) will be changing our plans for Saturday’s first Bay Nordic event of the season. We won’t be able to ski, however, the plan is to have a “Dryland” (think of it as a dry-run for when we do have snow) session aimed at introducing the kids to some of the fundamental movements of skiing, having fun, and meeting the coaches and fellow members....and of course the hot chocolate and cookies.

Here’s the plan:

- Do the session from 10:00 to 11:30 am...Shortened by 1/2 hour.
- Kids will check in to receive their Name Tag & Group as normal from 9:30 to 9:50 am and gather in their assigned groups to meet the coaches. Kids will receive their Group Assignments at the Check In.
- Mark Ernst and Group Coaches will lead the group on the fundamentals of skiing and some obstacle course work.

- Goals for the session are to give them some basic or more experienced knowledge of skiing and to burn off some energy by keeping them moving!

All kids that attend need to bring RUNNING SHOES & POLES (Poles will be available for Session Rentals).

We look forward to seeing everyone. We will also be adding the February 11th make up date to the calendar to get on snow some more.

Bay Nordic Coaching Clinic – December 2nd

We have scheduled the coaching clinic for all Bay Nordic coaches on Friday, December 2^nd from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. The clinic will be held at InCompetition Sports located at 2439 University Ave., Green Bay.

Pizza will be provided to attract and keep everyone's attention!

We encourage all coaches to attend!.....Including those that have coached in the past and those that are new to coaching or interested. Topics will include group session structures, teaching kids to ski, and technique progressions and games.

Coaching Volunteers & Clinic

Participation in the Bay Nordic program has exceeded our expectations with over 150 kids registering last year (our 2nd year of the program)...all indications are that even more kids will be involved this year. My position from the start has been to never cap number of participants. The more kids that learn to ski, the better! The downfall is that we need a lot of coaches (and volunteers) to run our sessions smoothly. Having said that, we are beginning to organize our coaches and recruit new coaches to help us through the year and future years.

Bay Nordic has been structured to group kids based on ages and abilities, giving them an opportunity to progressively learn the skills needed to have fun skiing and be successfull. To meet these goals we have found success in having 1-2 Head Coaches per group (depending on size), and 2-3 Assistant/Helpers. The Head Coaches take the role in presenting and leading curriculum with the Assistant/Helpers keeping the groups organized, reinforcing drills, helping with cold hands, tying boots, and anything else needed!

For myself, the time on the snow with my group are some of my favorites skis of the year...I think most of the past coaches feel the same. As the program moves forward and we begin to lose coaches as their own kids move on, the next "generation" of coaches will be taking over. Creating a sustainable coaching program is imperative for the program to continue.

So....please consider joining our Coaching program in any capacity, either as a Head or Assistant Coach. We have, and are working on, the following opportunities and clinics to learn and develop coaching skills for current and future coaches.

Bay Nordic Coaching Clinic after Thanksgiving Holiday

For all current and new Bay Nordic Coaches we will run a Coaching Clinic prior to the first session. The clinic will be facilitated by Mark Ernst with additional curriculum provided by some of our seasoned veterans. Written curricullum and technique/games will be included. We would like to see full participation from our coaches at this event.

Hello Bay Nordic Skiers.

Membership Registration Forms can be downloaded in our "Resources" section. We are asking for registrations to be submitted by December 1^st, however, early registration helps us greatly for planning! Please submit one registration for each child.

For equipment rental, priority is given as we receive registrations. We do the best we can to fit and provide equipment for each request. If we do run out of equipment, fees will be returned and we will inform you ASAP.

Also included is an order form for "Bay Nordic" long sleeve shirts. Please have these in soon so that we can estimate the correct amount to order.

Stump Farm Trail Race – Oct. 30^th
The Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team will host 10 mile and 5K trail races and a 5K run+20 mi Mt. bike duathlon at the Brown County Reforestation Camp in Suamico on Sunday, October 30th as a fundraiser. 10 mi race start is 9:30 a.m. 5K start is 11:00 a.m. Join the challenging 10 mi on twisty up and down single track or the moderate soft trail 5K for a perfect fall work out. Duathlon participants will run the 5K and then bike 2-10 mi loops on a fun and challenging single track. We encourage adult and high school athletes to come out. Age group awards for all races.

THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF BAY NORDIC

First off, we want to thank all the kids in Bay Nordic this year. Nearly 160 kids participated this year! Awesome to see so many little (and big) skiers. The number of kids that participate in a Green Bay regional ski program is great to see, we hope it continues to grow. This program wouldn't be successful without all the volunteers for coaching, helping with check-in, cookies, hot chocolate, etc, as well as, the local sponsors and contributors. Thank You All!

The last session turned out to be one of my favorite days of the winter, all the kids should be proud of the improvements have made this winter. The coaches really put the kids to the test with distance and they passed with flying colors. Photos of the day will be posted soon, we will let everyone know when they are ready.

RENTAL RETURN

The rental return is being scheduled for Saturday March 19^th at Noel & Jennifer's house….6387 Aspen Drive, Sobieski (same location as pickup). Equipment can be returned between 10:00am and Noon. If you are unable to make the date/time or if ski conditions are still good and you would like to use the skis, please let us know (920-822-8982) and we will be happy to schedule another time.

Hello Bay Nordic Skiers,

We miss everyone! It's been too long. We had a hard time cancelling the last event but unfortunately could not influence the weather. Even though the weather is warming up this week we still should have good trail conditions for this Saturday.

Our next event is this weekend and time for the kids to show off at the annual Stump Farm Ski Race hosted as a fundraiser for the Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team. As part of the festivities, a kids event will be held featuring the BAY Nordic kids. The kids event is set up to be a non-competitive fun event for the kids to go out and enjoy. Kids will be participating in the following distances.

½ km for the Penguins
2.5-3.0 km – Remaining Groups.

We had a lot of fun with this last year. All the kids enjoy showing their ski talents and receiving the participation medal at the end. Please come out and cheer the kids on. The Bay Nordic event is scheduled to begin at 10:06am. We are asking everyone to please have the kids in the warm-up area and ready-to-go by 9:45am. We will be providing our normal check- in and rental during the session so please look for us towards the warm-up area.

ANST has a races in the morning for Middle School, High School, and Adults (5K and 20K). A full schedule is at http://skiwithanst.org/. For those parents wishing to race the 20K, we will have some coaches available in the warm-up area to keep the kids entertained until 12:30pm.

Following the race all kids will need to return to their groups. We will have some fun activities for the kids in the warm-up & obstacle course area. The older groups (Caribou/Wolf & Polar Bears) will go out for a ski if time allows.

March 5^th, End of the Year Ski and Party

March 5^th is our final session and will consist of normal group activities and a cook-out. We have the back-end of the shelter along with the grill rented for the day. Grilling will start early but we would like to encourage families to stay into the afternoon, eat some food, and ski.

Birkie Skiers/MS Ski for the Cure pins

For those of you participating in the Birkie next weekend, Kristen Rodeheaver is once again selling MS Ski for the Cure ping. A $20 donation gets you a pin and an entry into the raffle for lots of great prizes. You must wear your pin on your Birke bib on race day to qualify for the raffle as you cross the finish line. Kristen will have pins available this Saturday.

CANCELED - Session 3 Jan 22nd

Unfortunately the temps do not look like they will be cooperating, below zero wind chills and low temps. For the safety (and happiness) of the kids, we are going to cancel the session tommorrow. Hopefully everyone gets out and enjoys some skiing when the weather warms up.

Session 3 and the Weather

Weather conditions are looking borderline for Saturday’s event. We will continue to monitor the forecast and weather to determine safe conditions for the kids. Each kid handles temperatures differently, so it is ultimately the parent’s decision whether to participate or not…we certainly understand and support each individual decision. In the event that we do cancel, an e-mail will be sent by 8:30am on Saturday morning.

The decision to cancel is a difficult one. Make up sessions are not possible due to the large number of volunteers needed and conflicting schedules, plus we look so forward to these Saturdays! Parameters that we will be using for making the decision will be:

<0 deg F pure temp or with the wind chill, cancel. Wind and sun make a big difference in how the kids (and adults) react to weather.
0 to 10 deg. F, limit the session to approximately an hour (maybe shorter for the little one depending how they respond). We will keep the kids close to the lodge and have the “floaters” take any cold kids back to the lodge.

The following precautions should be followed if attending:

· Kids/parents should cover all skin.
· Chem packs are highly recommended.
· Balaclava's and neck gaiters make a big difference.
· All coaches MUST have a definite plan and a shorter backup plan and or route.
· Less drills and more skiing with a shorter session.
· Stops for arm circles and even some "surges" help with keeping warm.
· Have the kids warm before going outside…get warmed up in the lodge.

Session 2, Jan. 8th

Hello Bay Nordic Skiers,

Session 2 is this Saturday (Jan 8^th). We should be all set to go. Brown County has re-groomed the trails after the big meltdown and has reported that the trails should be in good condition….a couple of inches of snow this week would be great though.

A couple of items for the upcoming weekend:

Session rentals should arrive 9:30-9:40 am. Allow enough time to get the equipment and be in the groups.
Allow enough time for check-in also. Kids need to be in their groups and ready to go at 10:00am
Do a gear check the night before. i.e. Poles fit the straps and are adjusted tight. Bindings are working. Have clothes layered for last minute "adjustments" according to the weather.
Hydrate the kids. One to two hours skiing is a long time without fluids. Don't forget about the bathroom before though.
LABEL ALL YOUR GEAR. Address labels work well, one for each piece. For BAY Nordic equipment, use a label that can be easily removed at the end of the year. Most of the gear is the same and can easily be misplaced.
We will have all coaches marked with a vest. Additionally, there will be at least one assistant in the lodge to help any kids that need to return early.

Bindings and Session 1

Thank you to all the kids coming out today. We had 132 kids check in today, over 50+ compared to our most attended event last year. We will be having a link for photos and additional information soon on the blogsite.

Bindings

We had a lot of problems with bindings today. The bindings on the rental skis are automatic bindings from Salomon and typically operate very well...not sure why so many problems are occuring but here are a few suggestions:

- Freezing - Bringing the ski from a warm environment such as a house then into cold weather may be causing the binding to freeze inside. Try to keep in a colder environment (i.e. garage) before skiing to allow the metal inside to "acclimate".

- Lubrication - Work some lubrication into the inside of the binding. The new bindings seem to be very "tight". Try snapping the boot into the system several times and lubricating. The goal is to "loosen" the metal springs inside so that they work properly.

Snow Just In Time

Greetings Bay Nordic Skiers

For the second year in a row we got the big snow storm needed right before our first event! Trails and weather should be great for Saturday.

A couple of items for next Saturday:

All kids need to be in their groups by 10:00am. Please allow enough time to check-in (all kids must check-in and out), pick up rental skis if needed, and find the groups. The sessions are scheduled to go from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Typically the younger kids will be in earlier for hot chocolate and cookies.
Check-in will be well marked outside of the lodge.
During check-in, kids will be provided their groups. Groups will be well marked below the trail head.
Parents must be with 3-4 years olds during the entire session. For the older kids, we ask that parents let the kids ski alone in their groups.
Please dress kids appropriately for the weather and activities. Try not to over dress as the kids will be very active in the groups…especially for the more experienced skiers.
Brown County has been very supportive of our program. Please obey their trail fee policies during the event. Kids 12 and under do not require a ski pass. However older kids (13 and older) and adults are required to have a trail pass. InCompetition sells Annual Passes for Brown County Parks. Additional sales locations are listed on the County's website. Day passes can be purchased at the trail head.

Begining Parent/Adult Lessons

Quick Reminder - Please remember to send your registrations and rental in. Rentals are filling up quickly and early registration greatly helps us with orgainizing the program. We are having a great response again this year and should easily surpase the number of kids from the first year..

New this year Bay Nordic is offering ski lessons for Parents and Adults new to skiing or with limited experience. The lessons are being facilitated by Deb Ernst as a fundraiser for the program. Instructors are available on a volunteer basis and 100% of the fees are going back into Bay Nordic. Both classic and skate techniques will be taught. Skiers must provide their own equipment. The lessons will be tailored to teach basic skills that will allow the skier to enjoy the winter! and maybe keep up with their kids!

Registration forms are under the "Resources" section of the blog. Please have registrations in by December 10th.

Hello Bay Nordic skiers. 2011 program information and registration forms are ready to go. A couple of key items:

We are asking that registrations are submitted by December 1^st. The earlier the better because it helps greatly with organization.
Two rental options are available this year. The options are detailed within the Membership Information. Equipment rental priority is given as registration is received. With the first year under our belt, we are excited that the planning process for the upcoming ski season is in full swing for the club. This includes fundraising to add to our equipment, expanding membership, coordinating events and registration, and overall organization.

We hope that first year members will join us again and also expect (hope) to have additional kids.

Coaching

Last year we had a great group of coaches that help out, especially after so many kids joined…hopefully those same coaches are able to assist again. If you are interested in helping coach or be an assistant coach please let us know.

Upcoming Event – Trail Race and Duathlon at the Reforestation Camp to support local ski team!

The Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team (ANST) is holding a trail running race and duathlon on October 31^st. ANST is a competitive club for middle and high school kids racing in the Wisconsin High School Nordic Ski League. Many of the BAY Nordic skiers may be part of this program in the future. This is an important fundraiser for the program. Information on the race can be found at
http://skiwithanst.org/. Races include a 5K (perfect for the older BAY Nordic kids), 10 mile (perfect for Denman), and duathlon (5K run & 20 mile Mt. Bike)…a great opportunity to burn off the Halloween candy! We hope to see you there with your BAY Nordic hats on.

Great job this year to all the kids that participated in Bay Nordic. Thank you for being part of the first year! The Kids Were Great.

The excitement and participation of the kids greatly exceeded the expectations of Jen and I, Mark and Deb Ernst, and Bob White when the five of us first got together and started putting the club together. A big thanks to all the volunteer coaches and parents that helped out…I'm afraid to list names because I'm sure to miss someone. We had a total of 98 kids registering with 70 to 80 kids attending each event.

We hope the club met everyone's expectations and intend to continue building a strong kids program and ski community in the area. We were recently confirmed by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which will allow us to pursue additional sources of grants and contributions.

Hope everyone has a great summer and joins us again next December.

Our last event is coming up on Saturday, March 6th. We hope everyone is able to attend. The schedule includes group activities as 10:00am followed by food and drink. The back half of the shelter and grill is rented for the BAY Nordic group. We will be providing burgers and hot dogs. If anyone is able to contribute with additional items, let Jennifer or Bob White know.

- Side dishes (pasta salad, potato salad, fruit, veggies, chips, etc.

-Paper plates

-Drinks (soda, juice, water)

Help will also be needed for setting up the food and with clean-up. We will start the grill early but are encouraging all families to extend their stay at the Camp into the afternoon.

If you haven't had a chance yet, check out the photos from the Stump Farm Race. All the kids did great with big smiles all around. The improvements that all the kids made throughout the year have been great.

Great job by the ANST at the Wisconsin State High School Championships this past weekend in Wausau.

Nordic Ski Club - Ashwaubenon School District: "The Latest News -

Irwin Wins State Championship, Guys Team Sets Historical Milestone

For only the third time in team history has a state champion from ANST been crowned. Deedra Irwin won the state classic race by a wide margin, placed 6th in the skate race and was named overall pursuit state champion last Saturday. It hasn't been 2007 and 2005 when Melanie Hoffman won the crown that an Ashwaubenon skier stood atop the podium. Irwin finished the morning's classic race a full 10 seconds ahead and added to her margin of victory in the pursuit by taking 6th in the afternoon's skate race. More details on the race results page.
The guys came up with several ANST firsts in the state championship races on Saturday; the first time two ANST male skiers (Shommer, Anshutz) made the top ten in the classic race, the first time two ANST male skiers (Shommer, S. Two more events are scheduled for the first season of BAY Nordic and hopefully we will be fortunate to have great conditions as we have had each session so far. I hope everyone has enjoyed the group as much as we have. All the contributions from all volunteers and coaches is greatly appreciated. We would have been even more lost without it. Total registrations for the year has hit 100 kids making this one of the largest kid programs in the State, well beyond our expectations. Between 75 to 80 kids have participated in each session.

February 20th

The next event is February 20^th and time for the kids to show off at the annual Stump Farm Ski Race hosted as a fundraiser for the Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team. As part of the festivities, a kids event will be held featuring the BAY Nordic kids....please encourage the kids to wear the BAY Nordic hats. The ANST is setting up three distances for the kids.

½ km for 3 to 4 yr old group
2.5-3.0 km – 5 to 6 & 7 to 8 yr old groups
3.5-4.0 km – 9 to 10 & 11 to 12 yr old groups

The BAY Nordic kids event is set up to be a non-competitive fun event for the kids to go out and enjoy. A 5km Middle and High School Race is scheduled for 10:15am for any older kids wishing to race at their parents consent. Any Bay Nordic member wishing to participate in the race must register separately.

We will be providing our normal check- in and rental during the session. All kids must report to their groups by 10:00am and remain with their coaches until the start. BAY Nordic kids will be starting after the 5km Middle and High School race at approximately 10:40 to 10:45 am. We will have coaches and volunteers out on the course to make sure we stay on the course and help out with any problems.

Jennifer will be coordinating cookies and hot chocolate for post-event refreshments. Please let us know if you would like to volunteer to help out on the course or with refreshments.

Additional information on the Stump Farm is located at http://www.ashwaubenon.k12.wi.us/highschool/athletics/stumpfarm.cfm#d105226. An adult race is at 11:30am for any parents wishing to participate.

March 6th

March 6^th is our final session and will consist of normal group activities and a cook-out. We have the back-end of the shelter along with the grill rented for the day. Grilling will start early but we would like to encourage families to stay into the afternoon, eat some food, and ski.

Thanks again to all the families making it to our Jan. 9th session....We're having a great time with this program and couldn't be happier with the group we have. Hopefully some of you caught Jen's interview on Fox 11 Saturday night (we missed it). Fox 11 is planning on doing a longer segment on the club for the next event for Jan. 23rd.

Session 2 Schedule

Greetings BAY Nordic Kids & Parents.

We're looking forward to Session 2 this upcoming Saturday (Jan 9^th). A couple of reminders for this Saturday:

All skiers must be with their groups no later than 10:00am. Please make sure to arrive early enough to check-in/register, get rentals if needed, and change into appropriate gear and clothing .
Check-in will be outside by the trail head to avoid the congestion in the lodge.
Skiers will be assigned a Group Color at registration. The colors will coincide with age groups from the first session; however, if you feel that your child should me moved up or down a group please let us know at registration or send an e-mail.
Remember to dress your kids appropriately…temperatures are expected to be colder than the first event.
Parents are required for 3-4 year olds. All other ages, we ask that parents allow their kids to ski in the groups themselves.
Hats are in for those that have not received them yet. They will be available at check-in.

First Event a Success

Wow! 74 kids checked in and skied at the very first Bay Area Youth Nordic Ski Club event. I hope all the kids (and parents) had a great time. It was awesome to see area youths getting out in a group and skiing....exactly what we were hoping for. The weather couldn't have been better with snow coming on the prior Wednesday, sunny skies, and temps in the 20s. Overall, I'm counting it as a success with a few minor tweaks needed to improve each meeting.

Thank you very much to all the coaches and parents who volunteered their time.

December 12th Ski

BAY Nordic hats are in as well as the Snow! Looks like we'll be able to ski this weekend.

If you are registered but are unable to attend on Saturday, please let us know.

Couple of items for Saturday.

1) We're scheduled for 10 am to Noon at the Brown County Reforestration Camp ski trails. Due to the high volume of kids (about 70 registered), if possible please try to show up early to spread out the check-in and rental. We will try to set up by the trail head and will make sure we are easy to find. All skiers must check in and out.

2) At check-in we'll give direction as to what group to go to. We hope to begin the warmups by 10:15.

3) Parents are asked to please help their kids put on the ski boots.

4) Brown County has been very supportive of our program. Please obey their trail fee policies during the event. Kids 12 and under do not require a ski pass. InCompetition sells Annual Passes for Brown County Parks. Additional sales location are listed on the County's website.

5) The warming hut is not open for Saturday. Hopefully we'll have use of the restrooms however that is no confirmed yet. Please make sure the kids are dressed properly and have extra clothes along.

BAY Nordic Update

Lots of skis waiting for the kids. December 12th (10am to Noon) is our first event for BAY Nordic and it looks like we may get some snow next week, hopefully enough to try out the equipment.

We will move forward with the event snow or no snow. If we don't have snow the schedule will consist of an introduction, rollerski demonstration, and games and exercises designed to introduce the kids to the movements of skiing.

Unfortunately, the warming hut at the Reforestation Camp is not open to the public until Dec 15th so please be prepared with extra jackets, hats, etc. for the kids.

We do not have any more rentals available for the year....over 60 kids have signed up for the program.

Registration and Equipment Rental

As of today, we have officially registered 53 kids for the program!!!...well beyond the expectations we had for the inaugural year. Through membership fees, funding and equipment donations, BAY Nordic has been able to accumulate 30 to 35 pairs of skis, boots, and poles of various sizes for the rental program. We are very proud to be able to offer this amount for a first year program.

At this time we must begin limiting the equipment rental for new registrants. All registrations we have received as of today will be provided equipment rental. If you have not yet registered, please contact us for availability. We have a few specific sizes remaining. Membership is still open for any kids with their own equipment.

Bay Area Youth Nordic Ski Club will begin for the winter of 2009-2010 for the Northeast Wisconsin region. The club is open for youth ages 3 to12 with emphasis on developing enjoyment of skiing though games and basic technique coaching. Response so far has been great with over 40 kids expressing interest. We are looking very forward to the year.

The schedule and membership information will be provided by the end of October.
